How to Fix a Damaged Electric Coil

Almost all electrical systems such as electrical connection terminals, electrical circuits and power transformers use electrical coils. Usually, electrical coils are coated with varnish or wrapped with insulating tape to provide insulation. In order to secure them in position, electrical coils are always attached by electrical tapes and put in protected housing.

Even though most kinds of electrical coils are so durable and may last for longer periods of time, they need rewinding and repairs time after time. If you’ve a damaged electrical coil in your house, you do not have to spend significant amount of money for the replacement. Just fix your electrical coil in order to save some cash. To fix it, you should do the following:

1. Know the Problem

Prior to doing the repair on your electrical coil, you have to correctly diagnose the issue first. In order to perform this step, you should first open the electrical coil housing and examine the electrical coils for any signs of dust, grime, wear and tear as well as corrosion on the housing or on the coil. If your electrical coil is physically broken, you need to replace it as soon as possible. If the electrical coil, on the other hand is physically intact, it can still perform well after the repair therefore, get your equipment ready to rewind it.

2. Take the Housing Off to Reveal Your Electrical Coil

In order to reveal your electrical coil, you have to take the coil housing off. Remove the screws which are holding the coil housing together and open the housing with the use of a screwdriver.

3. Note the Configuration and Position of the Electrical Coils

Once the coil housing is open, mark the configuration and position of your electrical coil by taking pictures or you may take a full video of the process of deconstruction so that it’ll be easier and more convenient for you to reconstruct the actual winding patterns of your electrical coils. As a matter of fact, the rewinding of electrical coil must be very accurate therefore, you have to note the exact configuration and position of the electrical coils.

4. Get Rid of the Wire from Tabs

Remove the wire from the tabs carefully and completely on the brush pads. Then, note the number of winds in every coil as you get rid of the wire. In addition to that, be very careful not to over bend the taps when removing the wires in order to avoid further damaging them. After that, cut the electrical coils of the wind above the armature.

5. Examine the Insulation

Prior to rewinding the wire, examine first the insulation. Repair damaged or burned insulation with the use of the insulating tape.

6. Rewind the Electrical Coil

Using similar gauge and kind of wires that were on your original coil, rewind the coil thoroughly back to its actual position. Leave the end wire loose on tab on your first wind earlier.
